Welcome!

Welcome to this virtual training module, Module 1 – an introduction to inclusive education.

If you are undertaking this training it means you have agreed to become a principal trainer within the Inclusive Education Teacher Training (IETT) programme. This training will prepare you to deliver Module 1 of the participatory training programme to participating pilot schools.

Optional reading: find out about who developed and produced this training module.

You will access reading materials, interactive learning activities, photo, film and audio content, case studies and guidance. This will help you understand key concepts and familiarise you with the training module you will use to deliver the training to schools.

Module 1 is divided into 8 sessions.

During each session of the virtual training you can participate in quizzes and learning activities.

Please engage with every aspect of the training. This virtual training of trainers (ToT) workshop should leave you well prepared for delivering training to pilot schools.

Overview of virtual training Module 1

At the bottom of this page are links to the 8 virtual training sessions for Module 1 together with an introduction to our training methodology. Here is what each section contains:

1. Introduction to Module 1 and the training methodology: introduces the facilitators, the IETT programme, your role as a principal trainer (PT) and the aims of this module. The training methodology used in the ToT workshops is demonstrated and guidance given.

2. Experiences, expectations and preferred learning styles: introduces you to the first session of the in-service training (INSET) that you will deliver to pilot schools. The session promotes teamwork and collaboration, it acknowledges participants’ experience and expectations, and it explores their preferred learning styles.

3. Discrimination – teachers’ attitudes: considers what discrimination means, getting you to reflect on your own experiences. The human rights basis for inclusive education is examined and teachers’ attitudes scrutinised.

4. Inclusive education awareness: makes sure you have a good understanding of the key concepts underpinning the IETT programme approach.

5. Barriers to inclusion: identifies 5 key types of barriers to inclusion and begins to explore ways to overcome them.

6. Using action research in the development of inclusive education: introduces action research and how it is used in each training module to embed inclusive practice in the pilot schools. You develop a vision for an inclusive school and consider ways to overcome the obstacles to realising that vision.

7. Reviewing and planning: helps you to reflect on what you have learned so far and how it meets your expectations. The session encourages you to set personal targets and introduces techniques to help you work together with your team to resolve any challenges you face in meeting these targets.

8.  Getting ready for pilot school INSET: prepares you and your team for the in-service training you will deliver to your pilot school. The session provides you with guidance, the PowerPoint slides you will need, a workshop plan, and our supplementary module containing guidance and advice for identifying and supporting learners with additional needs. You also get an opportunity to evaluate the training sessions.
